The Ultimate Camera Comparison: iPhone 16 Pro Max vs. Galaxy S25 Ultra vs. Pixel 9 Pro XL vs. OnePlus 13

Today, we’re diving into a comprehensive camera comparison between four flagship smartphones: the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, and OnePlus 13. Each of these devices brings unique strengths to the table, and I’m eager to see which one stands out as the ultimate photography champion.

Capturing My Gaming Room

To kick things off, I tested the cameras by capturing a portion of my new gaming room. I was pleased with all four exposures, but each phone rendered colors differently:

  • OnePlus 13 – Most vibrant, though slightly oversaturated.
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max – Muted colors, offering a more natural look.
  • Galaxy S25 Ultra & Pixel 9 Pro XL – Balanced exposures, with subtle differences in contrast.

Which one do you prefer?

Daylight Photography: Ultra-Wide to High Zoom

Ultra-Wide Shots: All four phones did a great job capturing the scene. The iPhone produced the most contrast, followed by the S25 Ultra and OnePlus 13, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL brightened shadows for a flatter look. The S25 Ultra rendered the most saturated blue skies.

Zoom Performance:

  • 1X: All four phones delivered crisp images, with the Pixel maintaining its shadow-lifting tendency.
  • 3X: Comparable details across all devices.
  • 5X: The S25 Ultra was the sharpest, followed by the iPhone and Pixel, with the OnePlus trailing slightly.
  • 10X: All phones performed well, though differences became more noticeable.
  • Max Zoom: The S25 Ultra balanced sharpness and zoom capability the best, while the OnePlus achieved the closest crop.

Indoor Lighting and White Balance in 4K Video

I tested the cameras in one of the coolest grocery stores I’ve ever visited. The results were impressive, but each phone handled white balance differently:

  • The iPhone 16 Pro Max produced the warmest tones.
  • The Pixel 9 Pro XL and OnePlus 13 had neutral-looking results.
  • The S25 Ultra slightly underexposed the shot, possibly compensating for the bright lighting outside.

Challenging Outdoor Conditions & Lens Flare

Shooting against direct sunlight:

  • The OnePlus 13 had the least blue in the sky.
  • The S25 Ultra created the darkest shadows, followed by the iPhone, then the Pixel.
  • The OnePlus seemed to artificially brighten the statue, almost as if there was an additional light source.
  • Lens flare appeared across all devices.

Selfie Camera and Portrait Video

For 4K indoor selfie video, the iPhone excelled in dynamic range, followed by the Pixel and OnePlus, while the S25 Ultra underexposed the shot.

For portrait video (cinematic mode):

  • The OnePlus 13 had the best edge detection.
  • The S25 Ultra and iPhone performed well but in reverse order for dynamic range—the iPhone handled highlights the best.
  • The Pixel 9 Pro XL lacks this feature on its selfie camera.

Macro and Slow Motion

  • Macro Photography: The S25 Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro Max allowed the closest focus, with the S25 Ultra edging out slightly. The Pixel produced a softer image, and the OnePlus, though unable to get as close, delivered rich colors.
  • Slow Motion: All four performed admirably, though I preferred the iPhone’s overall result.

Night Photography and Video

For selfie video at night, there were notable differences in image quality and stability. Moving to self-portrait video, the OnePlus 13 had the brightest image and strongest background blur, but the S25 Ultra looked better overall. The iPhone 16 Pro Max delivered the best results in both detail and balance.

For main camera low-light video, all four phones impressed, especially considering the bright lights and movement. The S25 Ultra captured the most detail, but it struggled with some sign details.

In low-light photography:

  • Neon signs: OnePlus did the best job, followed by the Pixel, S25 Ultra, and iPhone.
  • Sharpness Test: At ultra-wide, all phones performed well; at 5X, the S25 Ultra was the sharpest; at 10X, noise reduction differences were apparent.

For an extreme night shot with bright lights:

  • Ultra-Wide: All performed well.
  • 1X: Solid across the board.
  • 5X: The OnePlus handled sharp signage best, the Pixel added warmth, the iPhone had strong contrast but less shadow detail, and the S25 Ultra captured the most detail but struggled slightly with highlights.

Final Thoughts: Which Phone Wins?

At the end of the day, each of these smartphones excels in different areas:

  • Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra ($1,299) – Best overall zoom performance, impressive detail, and excellent night shots.
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max ($1,199) – Top-notch video quality, best skin tones, and excellent HDR.
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL ($1,249) – Great computational photography and well-balanced low-light shots.
  • OnePlus 13 ($899) – Most budget-friendly, vibrant colors, and solid edge detection for portrait video.

So, which one would you get? As I always say: Buy it nice or buy it twice! Let me know your thoughts, and I’ll see you in the next one!
