Today I want to talk about the Curve Breathe which is an awesome camera strap from BlackRapid.
If you’re a professional, or even a hobbyist, and you’re still using the camera strap that came with your camera I think you’re really going to like what I have to show you today.
Traditional camera straps that are uncomfortable and put a ton of pressure on your neck. If you’ve ever photographed an event or even just raveled and carried your camera with you all day with a regular strap you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.
So to your rescue comes BlackRapid with the Curve Breathe. It’s called the Curve because there is a slight curve to the pad making it a better ergonomic fit for your shoulder.
The Curve connects to your camera using the FastenR which screws into the ¼ 20 you normally use to mount your camera to a quick release plate. Next, we take the ConnectR, which clips onto the FastenR and then we use this threaded sleeve to lock everything in place. And as if that wasn’t secure enough, BlackRapid came up with with the LockStar, which snaps into place and ensures that there is no way this can inadvertently come off. Believe it or not there is even an additional tether kit that you can use to create an additional connection between your camera and the strap.
You can also use the ConnectR to further tighten the connection to the camera. The ConnectR can actually rotate independently of the strap which is a critical feature I’ll get back to later.
Alright, so if you’re right handed, you wear the strap over your left shoulder with the BlackRapid logo facing forward, and then clip the Brad, which is an integrated underarm stabilizer to secure the strap. But you might say, I can just wear my regular strap over one shoulder too. True, but it’s not going to be the same.
For starters, the shoulder pad is built with nylon mono mesh, curved TPE foam and poly air mesh. You may have just hear a whole bunch of funny words there but the important thing is that these materials create a very comfortable and breathable pad. So not only does the pad distribute the weight of the camera and lens across a larger area, it also let air flow through, which keeps you cooler.
Back to the regular strap. Most people wear their camera like this which you should NEVER do, because the lens is sticking out, and every time you turn there is a chance you’ll smack it again something and damage it. That aside, when you want to lift the camera to take a picture, the strap is pulling on your shirt each time which is annoying and uncomfortable. The Curve solves both of these problems. First, since the ConnectoR can rotate, you can spin the camera so that the lens is against your body, and even if you turn, it’s going to remain in place.
Second, since it is not attached to the strap, you can easily lift the camera to take a shot, put it back down and the strap doesn’t move. This is yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge. You can now continuously raise and lower the camera throughout the day without any chafing or pulling from the strap.
Another great feature are the 2 bumpers. These allow you to limit the the range of movement the camera has within the strap. I use the back one as a stop, so that the camera can’t go too far behind me. The front bumper is very important because it allows you to lock the camera in place.
So with traditional strap, if you need to lean over and move an object or you’re shooting a wedding and you’re fixing the brides dress, anything like that, the camera is going to swing down and can easily be damaged. With the Curve, I can just lower the front bumper and then lock it. Now, even if I bend down, the camera stays right where it is.
So obviously the Curve is packed with features, let’s talk price. At the moment it sells for around $73, and I’ll put links in the description below that you can use if you want to support the channel.
You may think this is a lot of money but remember that you’re connecting thousands of dollars worth of equipment to your camera strap, it should probably be a good one. It’s a great value and you know my motto, buy it nice or buy it twice.
If you’re a professional photographer, a serious hobbyist or just anyone that likes to have a camera with them, you should check out the Curve from BlackRapid.
